Lady Gaga spoke out just six days after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election. The results weighed heavily on her mind, and she made it clear that she was determined to stand up for marginalized groups during Trump’s time in office.

When asked about her reaction to the election, Gaga, who had endorsed Trump’s Democratic opponent Kamala Harris, said, “The most important thing is that I have so much compassion and love for those who are feeling afraid today. I recognize how blessed I am, and I’m thankful every day for what I have. But I know for many, this election feels devastating, and for them, community is going to be everything. I am one of many who stand with the [LGBTQ+ and other marginalized] communities. And we’re not going down without a fight. We will stay united. It will be tough, but I’m ready, and we’re ready. I want everyone to know they are deeply loved and not invisible.”

Gaga acknowledged that although she had written her new album Mayhem, she had hoped for a different political outcome. “What’s strange is I didn’t write this album expecting this result,” she said. “I prayed it wouldn’t happen. But here we are.”

In the eight days since taking office, Trump has already made moves targeting transgender and nonbinary individuals. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order that mandates “the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.” As a result of this order, the State Department halted all passport applications where applicants selected “X” as their gender marker.

Among those who voiced their support for the LGBTQ+ community following the executive order was Gaga’s friend, Ariana Grande.
