Kendrick Lamar made an impressive return to the Grammys tonight. Entering the evening as the most nominated hip-hop artist with seven nominations, Lamar took home the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his chart-topping hit "Not Like Us." During the pre-show ceremony, Lamar also won Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, and Best Rap Performance, all for the same track.
For his acceptance speeches, Lamar took the stage dressed in a classic Canadian tuxedo by Maison Margiela and a matching baseball hat by Christina Marie Rivera—a possible nod to the Canadian rapper who’s the subject of the diss track that earned him these awards.
In his speech for Record of the Year, Lamar paid tribute to Los Angeles, which has recently been devastated by wildfires. He called it the "neck of the woods that held me down... since I was in the studio scrapping to write the best raps." He added, "I can’t give enough thanks to these places that I rolled around since high school. Most importantly, to the people and families out in the Palisades and Altadena."
Over the years, Lamar has accumulated 17 Grammy wins, including accolades for Best Rap Album (To Pimp a Butterfly, DAMN., Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers), Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance.
This year’s nominations come after a highly successful period for Lamar. In November, he released his surprise album GNX, which propelled multiple tracks into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, including his third Billboard No. 1 of the year, “Squabble Up.” Lamar’s success is poised to continue: He’s set to perform at next week’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show and will start the Grand National Tour with SZA in April.
In December, Eminem shared his thoughts on Lamar’s 2025 Grammy nominations on SiriusXM’s Shade45. “It’s very stiff competition,” said Eminem, who is nominated in three of the same categories as Lamar this year. “Kendrick is gonna sweep that shit. He’s going to, and he should.” Sure enough, when Lamar returned to the stage to accept the Song of the Year Grammy, his collaborator and producer, Mustard, joked that someone should bring out a broom—because Kendrick is sweeping.
